Jared's Book of Wisdom

Wisdom is not a trait that is judged by age, but rather our actions as individuals.

“Jared’s Book of Wisdom” is a photo series that highlights wisdom as an important aspect of time, and how we all have different view on wisdom in our own lifetimes.

This project portrays my outlook on wisdom and aims to show it through a combination of street photography and mixed media practices.

Drawing inspiration from mixed media artists such as Alma Haser, my work aims to be very tactile and abstract while also having the emotional depth of a Matt Weber photograph.

The methods used to bring this idea to fruition is digital photography and scanography. The images I take will be printed out and manipulated through analog processes like scrunching, tearing and drawing. Then scanned back into a digital format and editing it further, while still keeping that very organic, handmade feel to it.

With this being the final assignment that I undertake for my studies there is an underlying importance with this project. It should ideally be my best piece of work to date, as well as something that I can include in my portfolio.

While I would like for this project to be an indicator of my skills in a professional context, I initially chose to create this project in the style of street photography because it’s what I love to do. However when you think of street photography, doing it “as a career” isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. In fact most photographers in this style don’t make any money at all.

This is why I have decided to incorporate the mixed-media approach to my project. Showcasing my skills as not only a photographer, but a graphic designer as well. Having completed my diploma of graphic design previously, I already have a portfolio that I can seamlessly add this project to.
This will hopefully give me more flexibility when it comes to finding work after my studies, whether it be in photography,
graphic design (or both!).

Focusing more on this project itself. The message I want to push with it is that wisdom is something that we can’t judge by age, but rather our experiences and who we are as people. I want to show people the wisdom I have attained so far in my lifetime through others. I want people no matter who they are to relate to these photos on some level.

Realistically while this project is targeted towards most ages, I think that the majority of people viewing or buying this book would be above the age of 16. Simply because younger
audiences don’t tend to be as interested in photography on a serious level as what an older audience would.

Ideally I would like this photobook to be viewed by other photographers in my field, as well as potential employers in both photography and graphic design.
